I glanced at my skill points. I was well short of my next ability, Shadow Speed. At the amount I gained, I wouldn't be able to afford Shadow Speed until Level 43. Abilities were getting expensive.

“So, who has new abilities?” I asked. I loved learning what my women picked up.

“I chose Fearless Charge,” Vrenda said. “I can rush at the enemy and hit her hard.”

“I picked up Sleep Shot,” said Ashanti.

Ashanti arched an eyebrow at me. Amusement played across her ebony face. “You just want to molest a sleeping woman.”

“To save her,” I pointed out in a level manner.

Arla nodded with such seriousness.

“I picked up Summon Demon Skulls,” Shessa squealed, sounding so excited. It was great seeing the dragonborn warlock going back to her old peppy self. “Yay!”

“Sounds metal,” I said.

“Yes!” Shessa flashed me a grin. “It summons demon skulls to swirl around me and attack our enemies. It's so metal!”

“Metal?” Arla asked. “What's metal about that? They're skulls?”

“Because it's strong and powerful?” Kazzi scratched her head. “Is that it?”

“Metal is a genre of music,” I said. “Well, it's called heavy metal. So things that are dark and wicked are called metal.”

“How is that heavy metal a genre of music, noble husband?” Leaf wore a puzzled expression.

“There's lots of drums and electric guitars with distortion and the singers growl and shout,” I said.

“So metal.” Shessa sighed like a lovesick maiden, so happy to have her new spell.

“Well, anyways, I have Life's Fury,” Leaf said, shaking her head, clearly not getting how awesome metal was. “After dealing damage to the enemies, it heals my allies for the same amount, split between us all.”

“So you deal 110 damage, and we all get healed 10,” I said since there were eleven.

Leaf nodded. “I know it's not much, but every bit counts.”

“No, no, it's cool,” I said. “Just wanted to understand how it worked. Anyone else pick up any skills?”

“Nope,” Relva said.

Thera shook her head. She looked... distant. She stared at the ground as Ulla, Arla, Kazzi, and Cheraliisia reported no new skills.

“You okay?” I asked Thera, moving to her.

She nodded.

I frowned. She was such a guarded assassin, though. I'd have to keep on eye on her.
